Carpet Cost Breakdown

Carpet projects have three main cost components:

  1. Carpet material cost (varies widely by quality and fiber)
  2. Padding/underlayment (improves comfort and extends life)
    • • Calculate how many strips of carpet are needed based on room width
    • • Minimize seams by orienting carpet in the optimal direction
  3. Installation labor (includes removal of old carpet if needed)
  4. Add 10% for waste and future patch repairs
  5. Add waste factor (typically 10%) for cuts and pattern matching
  6. Convert square feet to square yards (Ă·9) for ordering

Standard Carpet Widths Most residential carpet comes in 12 ft rolls. Wide format 15 ft rolls are available for larger rooms and reduce seams.

Industry Note Carpet is sold by the square yard in the US. Always confirm with your retailer whether pricing is per sq ft or sq yd.
