Common Tile Dimensions

Standard grout spacing: 1/16" (1.6 mm) for rectified tile, 1/8" (3.2 mm) for standard

%

10% for straight layout, 15% for diagonal

Pro Tips from the Workshop

  • •Always buy extra boxes from the same lot - colors vary between batches
  • •Diagonal patterns create visual interest but increase waste to 15-20%
  • •Large format tiles (18Ă—18+) go faster but require flatter subfloor
  • •Budget for thin-set mortar (~1 gallon per 10-15 sq ft) and grout

Tile Calculation Method

Tile estimating considers area, tile size, and cutting waste:

  1. Calculate total area to be tiled
  2. Factor in tile size and grout spacing
  3. Add waste percentage (10% straight, 15% diagonal)
  4. Divide by tiles per box to get boxes needed
  5. Add waste factor and round up to nearest full box

Tile is typically sold by the box — check coverage per box with your retailer
